The darkest night
before dawn

Cossacks, witches, mermaids, drowned women and other dwellers of Dikanka come face to face with their creator Nikolai Gogol (Alexander Petrov), a young scribe from St. Petersburg, who suffers from mysterious fits and has the ability to communicate with creatures from a different world.

Together with his boss, the brilliant city detective Yakov Guro (Oleg Menshikov), the aspiring writer arrives at Poltavshchina to investigate the mysterious murders of young women.

GOGOL
Nikolai Vasilievich

(Alexander Petrov)

I don’t know what possessed me to go to the police. Crime scenes make me ill: I start seeing things, my hand starts writing strange words. Fortunately, fate led me to Guro and he got me out of St. Petersburg, which had become unbearable after the failure of “Hans Kuchelgarten”.

My first day in Dikanka I managed to get run over by a horse, which resulted in my meeting the Danishevskys, a strange couple, who live on the outskirts of town. Lisa is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

GURO
Yakov Petrovich

(Oleg Menshikov)

I met a most curious young scribe back in St. Petersburg who insisted on accompanying me to Dikanka. We travelled for two days. The further from civilazation, the more superstitions, which can be very dangerous. In France a single wolf that attacked some farmers caused so much disturbance that the chaos reached the capital.

Whatever is happening in Dikanka is no less strange: the naked bodies of young women are found in the fields without a single drop of blood, there are tales of the Black Rider. On top of that, my scribe is having strange visions during his fits, that are somehow connected to the murders.

BINKH
Alexander Christophorovich

(Evgeny Stychkin)

Look at them! The narcissistic show-off and the beat-up bookworm. What are they trying to sniff out? They didn’t want to stay with me, so we’re all suspects, me especially.

That pale scribe claims, that he has a connection with the deceased, he somehow found out about the 30-year old disappearance of the miller’s daughter Oxana and her friends. Oh, they really shouldn’t dredge up that old story… Just to be on the safe side…

DANISHEVSKAYA
Elisaveta Andreevna

(Taisiya Vilkova)

Life in Dikanka – can it even be called a life? This wretched existence can only be measured by the doses of medication. Is this the entertainment I have been craving? And now, on top of it all, young women are mysteriously dying on the outskirts of town.

And yesterday, out of nowhere, a young scribe appeared in the road and was run over by our cart. He is sent here from the capital to investigate. Fortunately, he’s still alive. We had to lay him on the sofa in the living room and apply a compress. He has such a pale, but beautiful face.
